This past February, my family and I visited Santana Park (Parque Temático da Madeira) on Madeira Island. With its stunning landscapes, rich cultural history, and engaging activities, it was the perfect destination for all of us – especially for our three-year-old daughter, who absolutely loved it.

Santana is well-known for its iconic triangular, thatched-roof houses, known as palheiros, representing Madeira’s rural traditions. At Santana Park, you can find reconstructed versions of these houses, and stepping inside feels like traveling back in time. We explored the colorful homes while learning about the region’s agricultural history and traditional way of life. Even our daughter enjoyed walking in and out of the unique buildings. It was a fascinating experience for the whole family.
Nature and Outdoor Adventure
Santana Park is nestled in the lush greenery of Madeira, surrounded by the UNESCO-protected Laurisilva forest. The park spans 7 hectares and features walking trails through beautiful gardens filled with endemic plants.
While our daughter enjoyed running along the paths, we were captivated by the incredible views of the surrounding mountains and coastline.
The park also offers educational displays about Madeira’s natural environment, particularly the Laurisilva forest, which is home to many rare species. It’s a wonderful way for visitors of all ages to connect with the island’s natural beauty.

We took part in a basket weaving session, which was a fun and interactive way to experience Madeiran culture. Although we didn’t attend a festival, the park’s cultural displays gave us a deep appreciation of the island’s history.
Exploring the Mini Zoo: A Delightful Experience in Santana
One of the highlights of our visit was the mini zoo located within the park’s grounds. We encountered a variety of animals, and our daughter was especially thrilled. The sheep, in particular, were her favorite.
She couldn’t get enough of their soft, fluffy lambs, which she found absolutely adorable. The mini zoo offers a great opportunity for kids to interact with animals up close, making it not only an enjoyable but also an educational experience for children and adults alike. It added an extra layer of fun to our visit, and we all left with great memories.
