We recently traveled to Koh Samui for two weeks, marking our first visit to this beautiful island. With our four-year-old daughter, Emilia, accompanying us, we made sure to plan a relaxing and child-friendly itinerary.
Our approach was to take it slow, avoiding strenuous activities, and instead focusing on enjoying the serene and diverse attractions the island has to offer.
Here is a list of must-visit places for every visitor to Koh Samui. These spots are perfect for exploring the island and are also great for families with children, just as we experienced.
Central Samui
Central Samui is a vibrant shopping mall located in the heart of Chaweng, making it a hub for both locals and tourists. This bustling center offers a wide variety of shops where you can find local and international brands, catering to all your shopping needs. Beyond just shopping, Central Samui is packed with entertainment and dining options that make it a great destination for the whole family.
Inside, there are several playgrounds designed to keep children entertained, ensuring that the little ones have as much fun as the adults. The mall also features numerous food courts offering a diverse range of cuisines, from traditional Thai dishes to international favorites.
Outside the mall, you’ll find a large market where you can purchase handmade crafts, souvenirs, and local delicacies. The market is a lively spot, perfect for picking up unique items and enjoying the local culture.
For those looking to relax and enjoy a meal, there are many restaurants and cafes within the mall, providing a comfortable and pleasant dining experience. With its wide range of shops, food options, and entertainment, Central Samui is a must-visit spot that offers something for everyone in the family.
Wat Plai Laem
Wat Plai Laem is a stunning Buddhist temple located on the northeastern coast of Koh Samui. This temple showcases a unique blend of Thai and Chinese architectural styles, with its centerpiece being the impressive statue of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, depicted with 18 arms.
The temple grounds feature a serene lake filled with fish, numerous statues, and shrines, including a large laughing Buddha. Visitors can participate in traditional Buddhist practices, such as making offerings and lighting incense, while enjoying the peaceful and spiritual atmosphere.
Wat Plai Laem is also a fantastic spot for photography, with its vibrant colors and intricate details offering beautiful photo opportunities. This temple provides a deep insight into Koh Samui’s cultural and religious heritage and is a must-visit for anyone on the island.
Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai)
Big Buddha, or Wat Phra Yai, is one of Koh Samui’s most iconic landmarks. This 12-meter-high golden statue is situated on a small island connected by a causeway and is visible from afar.
Visitors can climb the steps to the base for panoramic views of the island and sea. The temple complex is an active place of worship, with smaller shrines and statues creating a serene, spiritual atmosphere filled with incense and prayer bells.

Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks
Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks, also known as Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks, are one of Koh Samui’s most famous natural attractions. Located near Lamai Beach, these rock formations are known for their unique shapes, which humorously resemble male and female genitalia.
According to local legend, the rocks symbolize an old couple who were shipwrecked and turned into stone. The site is not only a place of natural wonder but also steeped in local folklore.
Visitors to Hin Ta and Hin Yai can enjoy the stunning sea views and take memorable photographs. The surrounding area features small shops and stalls selling local crafts, souvenirs, and snacks, making it a pleasant spot to explore. Our favorite treat in the area was the delicious coconut ice cream, which provided a refreshing and tasty break during our visit.
The rocks are easily accessible and offer a mix of natural beauty and cultural interest, making them a must-see for anyone visiting Koh Samui.
Wat Khunaram
Wat Khunaram is one of Koh Samui’s most intriguing and spiritual sites, known for housing the mummified body of the revered monk, Loung Pordaeng. Loung Pordaeng passed away in 1973, and his remarkably well-preserved body is displayed in a glass case in a meditative position, as he requested before his death.
Visitors come to Wat Khunaram not only to see this unique display but also to gain insight into Buddhist beliefs about life, death, and the afterlife. The temple provides a place of meditation and reflection, with an atmosphere that is both serene and contemplative.
The temple grounds are adorned with traditional Buddhist statues and structures, offering a glimpse into Thai religious architecture and practices. Monks at Wat Khunaram continue to live and teach here, maintaining the temple’s role as a vibrant spiritual community.

Na Mueang Waterfalls
Na Mueang Waterfalls are among Koh Samui’s most picturesque natural attractions, featuring two impressive cascades. The first waterfall, Na Mueang 1, is easily accessible and offers a large, inviting pool at its base, perfect for swimming, picnicking, and enjoying a refreshing dip in the cool water.
A short but slightly more challenging hike leads to Na Mueang 2, the second waterfall, which is higher and more secluded. This waterfall is ideal for those seeking a bit of adventure and a more tranquil setting away from the crowds.
The area surrounding the waterfalls is lush and green, with dense jungle providing a beautiful backdrop and a sense of serenity. There are also small local vendors near the entrance selling snacks, drinks, and souvenirs, making it a convenient spot to spend a few hours or even a whole day.

The church features distinctive architectural style, with impressive domes and intricate interior decorations. Inside, you’ll find beautiful icons, religious artifacts, and detailed frescoes, creating a peaceful and reverent atmosphere.

A Memorable Family Adventure on Koh Samui
Although we were in Koh Samui for only two weeks, we managed to visit a significant number of places on the island. We explored these locations on our own or joined guided tours. The island’s manageable size makes traveling around easy and convenient. Koh Samui offers a rich variety of attractions that cater to families and individuals alike.
